Quest For The World's Smallest PDA Phone

The quest for the smallest pda phone cannot be taken lightly because there are many who claim to have the world’s smallest pda phone.  But, in that quest you will likely notice that each time a company announces the smallest pda phone, another company follows suit within a few months announcing a new smaller one.  So here’s a breakdown of the world’s smallest pda phone by way of a timeline.

November, 2004.  Axia announces the world’s smallest pda phone called the Axia A108.  This phone measures 4.3 by 1.8 inches and is 0.8 inches thick.  The ratings on this, the world’s smallest pda phone, are not good.  The company, Axia, has never been heard of by many and therefore has not established trust with consumers who wonder if they will be able to unlock it. The pda runs on an operating system that, at that time, was new – and it was Windows.  Again, no established trust built.  The features of the world’s smallest pda phone of 2004 are a 240 x 320 QVGA touchscreen, 1.3 MP digital camera, tri-band GSM, and class 10 GPRS.  At the time of the ratings, this was all of the information that had been released.

The “new” MiniStar P990 is being sold at online auctions and cheesy websites as the world’s smallest pda phone.  The reason I said “maybe” 2006 is because I found a forum posting talking about the phone from then, otherwise this “new” phone has no release date to be found.  The MiniStar P990 world’s smallest pda phone is 40x70x20 mm.  This one is cheap, too, at only $185.

June, 2008.  The newest of the world’s smallest pda phone is the Asus P560, and this one seems to be causing quite a stir at the ratings websites.  The Asus P560 is not the world’s smallest pda phone as advertised pre-release, but it is quite small at 116.4 x 64.2 x 13.4 mm.  I think the MiniStar P990 has it beat in the smallness race.  This device runs on Windows Mobile 6.1, has a 3.2 mp camera and a 2.8” touchscreen.  Bluetooth and WiFi capabability makes this smallest pda phone desirable, but it is not cheap, retailing at over $750.

Well, the quest has ended and I think we have a winner (and may have learned a lesson in the process).  Keeping in mind that I may have missed something, the MiniStar P990 is the world’s smallest pda phone.  But I have serious doubts to its performance.  So, what’s the lesson?  When it comes to pda phones, smaller is not always better.
